Prevent Infections With Maggot Therapy

Hear or see the beast called maggots sometimes make people disgusted. But who would have thought, this disgusting animal that can actually help seseseorang avoid infection.
A new study published in Clinical Infectious Diseases has found that maggots are useful for treating deep wounds without increasing the risk of further infection.
As quoted from WebMD on Thursday (05/20/2010) It works by maggots eat dead tissue (debridement) in the wound that may increase the risk of infection.
This treatment can help reduce the risk of infection such as after surgery, because the maggots are allegedly able to secrete substances that can fight infection.
This technique is known as Maggot Debridement Therapy (MDT) which has existed since the 1920s as a treatment for bone and tissue infections. While research is now conducted to demonstrate the safety and benefits of this therapy.
MDT technique using sterile maggots type of Phaenica sericata, these maggots will be placed on the injured person twice a week and left for 48-72 hours.
Maggot who is inserted into this wound will take some dead tissue, but still allowing the living tissue remain intact. Currently there is concern if the maggots are used given disinfectant because it can worsen an existing infection in the wound.
Researcher Ronald A. Sherman and Kathleen J. Shimoda conducted a study to evaluate and see the safety and effectiveness of maggot therapy. The study involved 143 patients who were analyzed between 1990 and 1995. The study shows that given maggot wound has a small chance of infection compared with untreated wounds using maggots.
Also found in 10 wounds treated with maggots, none of which were infected. While 6 of the 19 patients not treated with maggot infection after surgery, and surgical wound closure even more cluttered.
Besides helping to prevent infection in wounds, maggot therapy is also useful to address the nerve pain in the foot, eliminating non-traumatic injuries and wound healing after surgery.
This therapy is quite safe, because although maggot therapy is not working as expected, this treatment will not harm the person. However, this therapy is only used when the use of antibiotics or surgery that is done can not give a positive result or a maximum.
One study conducted by researchers from the University of Manchester found that 12 of 13 patients with an MRSA infection, get healing his wounds with maggot therapy.Whereas virulent of staph that infects the body is impervious to some antibiotics.
